The Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday cut one of their former top wide receivers.

The Jaguars released Zay Jones and kicker Joey Slye on Tuesday. Cutting Jones saves the team $4.5 million against the salary cap but results a $6.6 million dead money charge.

The signing of Jones was a big addition by the Jags prior to the 2022 season. He had a strong season for them in 2022, catching 82 passes for 823 yards — both career-high marks. He added 5 touchdown catches that season.

Last season, Jones had 34 catches for 321 yards in 9 games as he dealt with knee and hamstring injuries.

Jones was Jacksonville’s second-leading receiver in 2022 behind Christian Kirk.

The Jags made Jones expendable after signing Gabe Davis over the offseason and drafting receiver Brian Thomas in the first round last week. The Jags also drafted kicker Cam Little, which may have made them feel confident about dropping Slye.
