Rolando McClain to be released by Cowboys, become free agent

Rolando McClain

Rolando McClain will soon be available for NFL teams to sign.

McClain was conditionally reinstated by the NFL on Friday. News about his reinstatement came as a surprise to many considering the linebacker hasn’t played in the league since 2015 and had mostly been forgotten about. The word at the time was that the Dallas Cowboys, who held his rights, were expected to cut him. That is precisely what will happen.

The Cowboys are releasing McClain, who will then become a free agent, as first reported by Pro Football Talk.

McClain is now 30. He played for the Raiders from 2010-2012, signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013 but retired instead, and then returned to the league in 2014 and played for the Cowboys. McClain has had multiple suspensions from the league and multiple off-field arrests. He also had several reported substance abuse issues.

It would be a major surprise to see an NFL team take a chance on him at this point.
