It has been more than three years since Bryce Harper coined the phrase “clown question, bro,” but people don’t forget. Those three words will follow Harper for the rest of his life, no matter how hard he tries to dig a hole and bury them in it.
During a chat with the media at the All-Star Game in Cincinnati on Monday, Harper was asked if he would say “clown question, bro.” He didn’t care that the All-Star Game is typically a lighthearted event. Peter Hailey of CSNWashington.com transcribed the exchange:
“I don’t wanna do that,” Harper responded abruptly.
“You don’t wanna do it?” the reporter asked again.
“Nope. Not doing it,” Harper said while slightly shaking his head.
Harper was then asked whether he would answer questions that were created by some kids. But before doing so, he made sure to lay out a few clown-related ground rules.
“What kind of questions are they?” Harper wondered aloud, but continued before anyone could elaborate. “If it’s anything about clowns or anything like that, I will not answer them.”
The video below shows that Harper was being very serious:
That doesn’t sound like the same guy who wore this Halloween costume just a few months after he ripped into the reporter over the question about drinking, does it?
The whole “clown question” thing has taken on a life of its own. A U.S. Senator even uttered the phrase during a media session at Capitol Hill back in 2012. But that was then, and this is now. Harper no longer wants anything to do with it.
