Report: MLB may relax uniform regulations in response to player criticism
With several players speaking out against Major League Baseball’s uniform policies, a change could reportedly be in the offing.
According to Gabe Lacques of USA Today, the league and the MLB Players’ Association have been in contact since spring training about adding “flexibility” to the league’s uniform policy. It is unclear if these efforts will be accelerated in light of recent player criticism, but it will certainly raise more awareness toward the policies.
MLB’s policies include a rule that shoes must be at least 51% of a team’s primary color, and there is little wiggle room in the regulations. That inspired public criticism from Ben Zobrist of the Chicago Cubs, whose sentiments have been widely supported by other players.
If MLB wants to appeal to a younger audience, some loosening of policy may be necessary. It sounds like there is a mutual understanding of that.
