Kyrie Irving does not celebrate Thanksgiving: ‘F— Thanksgiving’

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving said something on Wednesday night that might earn him more headlines than his whole “Earth is flat” assertion.

Irving’s Boston Celtics lost 117-109 to the New York Knicks on Wednesday night. In the locker room after the game, someone wished Irving Happy Thanksgiving. According to multiple reporters, Irving responded by saying “f— Thanksgiving” and declaring that he does not celebrate the holiday.

No, Irving is not trolling here by not celebrating the holiday. He actually has a very good reason not to.

Irving’s family has roots with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. His late mother was a part of the tribe and adopted out of it, while his grandparents and great-grandparents were citizens of Standing Rock.

To him and many others with Native American heritage, Thanksgiving does not represent a time to feast on the harvest, but rather it reminds them of the genocide and conquest of Native Americans by the colonists.
