Report: Colin Kaepernick trade being held up by $4.9 million in salary
The trade that would send Colin Kaepernick to the Denver Broncos is being held up because Denver and the San Francisco 49ers can’t agree on who will pay $4.9 million of his guaranteed 2016 salary, according to a report.
Kaepernick is owed $11.9 million in 2016, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos are willing to pay $7 million of that. They are pushing for the 49ers to pay the other $4.9 million, but for the moment, San Francisco is not interested in paying to get rid of a player that they would be happy to keep.
In addition, Kaepernick himself is reportedly unwilling to forfeit the $4.9 million difference to make the deal happen, though Schefter notes that Kaepernick and the Broncos have been able to make progress on the payment structure of the rest of the contract from 2017 through 2020.
The parameters of the trade are reportedly completely agreed to, and the dispute over salary is the only thing keeping the deal from being finalized. Between the Niners, the Broncos, and Kaepernick himself, We will see who blinks first – if anyone blinks at all.
