Jerry Jones would trade Cowboys’ most valuable team title for first downs

It doesn’t sound like Jerry Jones will be throwing a big party to celebrate the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

Forbes recently ranked the Cowboys at No. 1 of their most valuable franchises, with the team worth about $4 billion. This sounds like it would be cause for big celebration, particularly when you consider that Jones paid around $130 million in full to purchase the team, the stadium leasing rights, and paying off their bills back in 1989.

Jones, however, has bigger fish to fry.

“I would say that I would trade it for some first downs,” Jones said of the ranking, via Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram.

First downs, Jerry? You’re not going to aim higher? A few touchdowns? A few more playoff appearances? A Super Bowl? Reach for the stars, man. Trading a $4 billion franchise for a few first downs seems like a bad deal, but then again, Jones’s GM skills have been panned, so maybe not a surprise.

“I did not get into the NFL to make money,” Jones added. “I had some money, and I spent it to get in the NFL. I spent all my money practically to get into the NFL.”

Now Jones is worth a lot more money, though he has no plans of selling or even stepping away from football operations anytime soon. If nothing else, Jones can never be accused of not wanting to win.
