Todd Bowles: Jets are ‘probably getting killed’ if Christian Hackenberg plays

It sounds like, despite injuries and poor play to their other quarterbacks, the New York Jets would still much rather avoid throwing Christian Hackenberg into the fire.

The rookie quarterback has been buried on the depth chart all season, and coach Todd Bowles seems as if he would rather keep it that way.

“It’s possible,” Bowles conceded Thursday when asked if Hackenberg might dress for Saturday’s game against New England, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.

As for whether Hackenberg will play, well, don’t hold your breath.

“If we get down to the third quarterback, we’re probably getting killed in the first place,” Bowles said bluntly.

Hackenberg was awful in preseason and, even with Ryan Fitzpatrick struggling and Bryce Petty being both hurt and inconsistent, hasn’t gotten any buzz during the regular season. He sounds like he’s a long way from being NFL-ready.
