Mike McCarthy calls out Davante Adams; Aaron Rodgers stops just short

Davante-Adams

The Green Bay Packers’ offense has been shockingly disappointing for almost two months now. A lot of that has to do with losing Jordy Nelson for the season to a torn ACL. Some of it has to do with Eddie Lacy being banged up for weeks, and at least a little stems from Aaron Rodgers battling some injuries of his own.

But what about second-year wide receiver Davante Adams?

Many expected Adams to step in and help fill some of the void left by Nelson. An ankle injury early in the season certainly didn’t help with the former second-round pick’s development, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy was very critical of Adams after Thursday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

“Didn’t have a very good day today,” McCarthy said when asked about Adams dropping several passes. “The consistency we’re getting in certain areas needs to pick up.”

More specifically, McCarthy basically blamed Adams for a key interception Rodgers threw in the fourth quarter.

“It’s a basic route,” he said. “It didn’t look like it was a very good route.”

Rodgers, who completed 22 of 43 passes for 202 yards, a touchdown and a pick, said he is not on the same page with his receivers.

“I’m obviously going to have to make sure my preparation is as high as it’s ever been because we need to get on the same page, the passing game,” Rodgers said, via Weston Hodkiewicz of the Press-Gazette. “We’re just on different pages. When you miss throws, when I’m throwing at a certain depth, when receivers are running at certain depth — we’re obviously on different pages.”

Rodgers has been targeting Adams a ton, but the results just aren’t there.

And it’s not just Adams. Randall Cobb hasn’t been connecting with Rodgers, either, and a lot of that probably has to do with him getting more attention from defenders now that Nelson is out. People have been quick to blame Rodgers’ girlfriend for some of Green Bay’s struggles this season, but she has nothing to do with it. Green Bay suddenly has four losses and is behind the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North. They need to figure it out in a hurry.
