Mike Pettine strongly considering switch to Johnny Manziel

Johnny Manziel Brian Hoyer

A quarterback controversy is evident with the Cleveland Browns.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine said after Sunday’s 26-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills that he is considering a switch at quarterback from Brian Hoyer to Johnny Manziel.

“The door is definitely open for a change at the quarterback position,” Pettine said to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio. “It’s not like we’re just going to go back to Brian (Hoyer). This has been a cumulative thing, where discussions about a change at quarterback have been more and more lively. We’ll evaluate both quarterbacks and have a decision soon.”

Hoyer was 18/30 for 192 yards and two interceptions in the loss. The score was 20-3 when Pettine benched the starter for rookie first-round pick Johnny Manziel. Manziel proceeded to lead a touchdown drive and went 5/8 for 63 yards, while rushing for 13 yards and a score in his limited action.

Though the Browns have gone 7-5 under Hoyer, the 29-year-old has struggled the past four games; he has only thrown for 1 touchdown and 6 interceptions while the team has gone 2-2.

Switching to Manziel is a change the Browns might need to make. At 7-5 and with four difficult games left, they probably will not make the playoffs. Maybe they should see what the rookie can do. At the least, he should be able to gain valuable experience. At best, he shows some of the magic he was known for at Texas A&M and helps lead the Browns to the postseason.
