Antoine Walker wants to be the next coach of the Boston Celtics

antoine-walkerThe Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly agreed to a deal that will release Doc Rivers from his contract and allow him to head west. Boston is likely going to have to rebuild its entire roster heading into next season, starting with the head coach. So who should fill that vacancy?

One brave candidate has stepped forward and thrown his name into the ring. Remember Antoine Walker? Of course you do. He was a fan favorite for a while in Boston thanks in part to the infamous “Walker Wiggle,” and now the former sixth overall pick wants to rejoin his old team as a coach.

And he’s not kidding.

Last we heard from Antoine, he was living with a roommate and had no car after making over $100 million during his NBA career. He could certainly provide a lot of advice for young players on what not to do with money, but there’s no way this is happening.

As for the actual candidates, Vinny Del Negro is one name that has been tossed around already — albeit an incredibly unpopular one. Brian Shaw has been courted by almost every team with a coaching vacancy, and the Celtics are sure to make their pitch as well. Time will tell who will replace Rivers, but we’re confident it won’t be ‘Toine.

Antoine Walker is 35, struggling in the D-League, living with a roommate, has no car

The story of Antoine Walker is not a pretty one. Walker is 35, slumming it in the D-League, and still hoping for another chance to play in the NBA. He made over $108 million during his playing career, but he blew it on bad investments, gambling, and being too benevolent. He filed for bankruptcy two years ago. He began playing in the D-League in 2010, and suffered the embarrassment of being served child support papers while partying in a club last year.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Ballard spent a few days with Walker recently and chronicled Toine’s daily life in the D-League. Ballard paints a sad picture of a man who’s experienced the cliched fall from grace, a three-time All-Star who’s now making less than $25,000 playing for the Idaho Stampede. Walker lives with a roommate, has no car, and subsides on his $40 per diem from the team. Even he has trouble believing how far he’s fallen.

“Believe me, I’ve had many a day where I just look at myself in the mirror, like, Damn, how you get into this situation?” Walker told Ballard.

Walker is trying to work his way out of a $770k debt and still hopes he can one day sign an NBA contract.

“Honestly, I don’t feel like the guys in the NBA are that much better than me,” he believes.

The entire article is worth a read if you’re interested in learning more about his fall. The guy is overweight and shooting poorly for the Stampede, and probably lucky they have him under contract. This is the exact sort of story all athletes need to read to make sure they avoid the same problems in their careers.

Antoine Walker Served Child Support Court Papers While Partying in the Club

Antoine Walker is trying to make the best of what has become a disappointing path in life. Once a multimillionaire who made a ton of cash playing with the Celtics, Walker proceeded to go bankrupt. He then settled for a five-figure salary in the NBA’s D-League, where there were times when he couldn’t even hit iron on a simple free throw.  It’s nice to see Walker still makes time for some leisure and hits the club every now and then.

Although, partying at the club probably isn’t that fun when you are interrupted with legal documents.  According to the Chicago Sun-Times via I Am a GM, Walker was served papers this week while he was in a local nightclub.

Antoine Walker was in court this week for allegedly not paying child support in over 2½ years to his ex Donna Grant. He recently got his court notice while partying at a local nightclub, his ex says. Grant also contends she had been trying to get him in court since May. In 2009, it was reported that the NBA star was broke and in debt.

Avoiding child support payments would be nothing shocking from a former pro athlete who took the Siberian tiger approach to financial stability.  Unfortunately for Walker, his night at the club was probably ruined.  However, there are ways he can continue to avoid his responsibilities if he so chooses.  Antoine should probably give Chris McAlister a call — he’ll give him a few pointers.

Antoine Walker Free Throw Fail (Video)

Antoine Walker just wants to make some money.  He filed for bankruptcy about six months ago so he’s looking to resurrect his NBA career in some way.  Walker recently signed a five-figure contract with the Idaho Stampede of the NBA D-League.  In his debut Wednesday night, Antoine scored 13 and supposedly looked solid considering how out of shape he is.  There was no Walker Wiggle, but there was an embarrassing free throw.  Check out the video of Antoine Walker airballing a free throw, courtesy of Deadspin via YouTube user outsidethenba:

We’re told Walker also missed by about three feet on one of his infamous three-point attempts (of which he missed all three), so obviously there’s some work to be done.  Give him some credit for getting back after it, I guess?
