Jimmer Fredette’s Girlfriend Whitney Wonnacott Will be the Real Draft Winner

BYU guard Jimmer Fredette is one of the highest-profile players in this year’s NBA draft. We say he’ll be a borderline starter in our NBA draft guide (a must-read), and it’s possible he could go in the top 10 now that Sacramento has moved up in the draft. Jimmer will be a popular player wherever he goes (or at least well known), and his girlfriend, Whitney Wonnacott, seems to be as psyched for the draft as any prospect out there.

On Monday she tweeted “Seriously can’t wait to get to New York.” The next day she wrote “Time to pack. 3:00 am wake up call. SO EXCITED! Thursday can’t come soon enough.” And of course on draft day she said “HAPPY DRAFT DAY!! Goodluck to my boy jimmerfredette such an exciting day!”

So why do we bring Whitney up? Beside every great draft pick is a woman (unless you’re a Pouncey twin), and how they act on draft day is critical. Remember when Brady Quinn’s girlfriend blew him off on a kiss because he slipped in the draft? Embarrass your man on national TV like that and you’ll end up dumped as she was. This is a time when you’re going to get the most television exposure in your life. Look good, keep it cool, and support your boyfriend. And don’t be afraid to play to the camera the way Greg McElroy’s sister did — at the least you’ll pick up a few hundred new followers on twitter.

A Beginner’s Guide to the 2011 NBA Draft: Profiles on All the Top Prospects

Reading NBA draft previews sometimes feels like wading through Princess Bride-style quicksand. With so many names to remember and stats to sift through, it can be hard to figure out what draft info is important and what’s just unnecessary nonsense.

Do you care as a casual fan, for instance, that Enes Kanter has 5.9% body fat? Or that Marcus Morris can run three quarters of the court in 3.2 seconds whereas his twin brother, Markieff, runs it in 3.4 seconds? Not really, right?

You just want the basics. Which is why I wrote this beginner’s guide.

Draft lunatics will already know most of what is written below. It’s not quantum physics, just a good starting place for people staring at the screen on draft night wondering “who is that guy?”

If you’re here for insight into Nikola Vucevic’s standing reach, you’ve come to the wrong place. But if cheat sheet info delivered in 100 words or less is your thing, I’m your guy. You won’t find any quicksand here.

Here’s my Cliff Notes-style guide to the 2011 NBA draft:

BYU, Where Jimmer Fredette Happens Commercial (Video)

BYU guard Jimmer Fredette has taken the rare step from All-American player to college basketball superstar. He’s easily the biggest and most recognizable name to fans in college hoops, and his games frequently draw the highest ratings on TV in the sport. He has his own personalized BYU hoodies available in the student store and his own Teach Me How to Jimmer rap song. He’s so amazing, he’s inspired one YouTuber to compose this video in the image of the NBA’s “Where Amazing Happens” advertising slogan. Check it out:

You think ordinary players get that type of treatment? You have to be on another level to warrant such creativity, and Jimmer truly is. The only question is whether he’ll be at his best to lead BYU to a deep run in the tournament. Thanks to SI Hot Clicks for the video.

Jimmer Fredette Now Has a BYU Hoodie

Jimmer Fredette is a college basketball god and local legend in Provo and upstate New York. He’s transcended into the rare category of national college basketball superstar thanks to his prolific scoring ability and unique name. And with that type of popularity comes crazy posters, fabulous merchandise, and tremendous swag.

Falling into the latter category is something CNBC’s Darren Rovell passed along on Saturday: BYU is now selling a Jimmer Fredette hoodie at their student store. Check it out:

We’ve seen personalized shirts and jerseys, but a personalized hoodie has to be a first. You know you’re a star when you have your own hoodie. And if anyone deserves it, it’s certainly The Jimmer. He is incredible.

Jimmer Fredette Brother T.J. Rapped Prior to BYU-San Diego State Game

Jimmer Fredette is the nation’s leading scorer and one of the most exciting players in college basketball. The senior from Glens Falls, New York has become a fan favorite thanks to his ability to put up unreal point totals. In regular season action, he’s cracked 40 points four times in his career, including a 49-point game last season against Arizona. But Jimmer isn’t the only Fredette who’s developed a following recently — his brother T.J. has been able to use Jimmer’s fame to promote his rap career.

T.J. created a song called “Amazing” about Jimmer’s development as a basketball player that has received plenty of attention. In addition to creating that song, T.J. has been able to perform at games. As I learned from ESPN reporter Diamond Leung, the elder Fredette brother was able to entertain the crowd at the Marriott Center before BYU’s huge game against San Diego State. Here’s a video of how it looked:

Every game this season Jimmer has been able to increase his national profile. Right there with him has been brother T.J. who is beginning to make his mark as another minority: a white rapper.
