Reporter angers Nicolas Mahut by congratulating him after loss (Video)
Nicolas Mahut lost a tough match to Mikhail Kukushkin in four sets at the French Open on Monday. After the disappointing defeat, Mahut had a cringe-worthy exchange with an American reporter who came to his press conference unprepared.
Before asking his question, the reporter started by congratulating Mahut.
“Congratulations?” Mahut said with a look of disgust. “I lost.”
“You lost, oh, OK,” the reporter replied. “So, what happened out there?”
The question seemed to infuriate Mahut, and who can blame him? While entertaining for people like us, the fact that the guy was writing about a match he didn’t pay attention to is incredibly insulting.
“Are you serious? Mahut fired back. “Did you watch the match?”
“No, I didn’t,” the reporter said. “I was told you won. I’m sorry.”
Mahut then ended his segment with English-speaking reporters, asking in French for French questions only. Talk about an embarrassment.
