Roberta Vinci acted differently than most players when facing Serena Williams. Rather than back down or be intimidated by Williams’ hard shots, body language, and yelling, Vinci responded.
The Italian tennis player upset Williams in the semifinals at the US Open Friday in three sets and played fearless. Knowing the crowd was against her — to the point that she actually apologized after the match for beating the fan favorite — Vinci demanded their support after a particularly impressive point in the third set.
“I think she played literally out of her mind,” Serena said after the match. “I thought she played the best tennis of her career.”
We can’t disagree. What an awesome performance.
