The Athletes of Sega Genesis Tennis and Car Racing Games

Andre Agassi Tennis – Released on Dec. 30, 1992, this game came out the same year Agassi won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. Agassi would go on to win seven more Grand Slam titles, and is one of just seven men to win all four Grand Slam events over the course of his career. He’s also one of just two men ever, the other being Rafael Nadal, to win all four Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal. It was just recently announced that Agassi will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame this year. Oh, and that hair.

Pete Sampras Tennis – Sampras won 10 events, including Wimbledon and the Australian Open, in the year leading up to the release of this game in Dec. 1994. Sampras went on to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon the next year as well. When he retired in 2002, he sat atop the list of most career Grand Slam titles with 14, but he never even reached a French Open final. Sampras was in attendance when Roger Federer broke his Grand Slam record at the 2009 Wimbledon. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.

Jennifer Capriati Tennis – Capriati was just 16 years old and would go on to defeat top-seeded Stefi Graf in the gold-medal match of the Barcelona Olympics two months after this game was released on June 1, 1992. Coming off a season in which she had finished the year ranked sixth, she would finish the 1992 season ranked seventh. Capriati soon became burned out and took more than a year off from tennis. It would be more than seven years before Capriati would get back into the top-10. She retired in 2004, and last year, reportedly overdosed on prescription pills.

Mario Andretti Racing – This game was released on Aug. 14, 1994, two months before Andretti retired from the Indy Car circuit. A year earlier he became the oldest winner in Indy Car history at the age of 53. Andretti is also the only person ever to win an Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and Formula One World Championship. He was named Driver of the Century by the Associated Press in 1999. Andretti now has his name on everything from cigars to go-kart tracks to wine.

Newman Haas’ Indy Car featuring Nigel Mansell – Mansell was in the midst of his Formula 1 return after a brief stint in the CART series when this game was released on June 1, 1994. However short, his time with the Newman Haas CART team was relatively successful. He won the 1993 CART Championship, but faltered in early 1994. Not known for his likability, Andretti once said of Mansell, “I had a lot of respect for him as a driver, but not as a man.” Mansell was recently named an ambassador for car maker Lotus — the company that gave him his first break in racing.
