Aaron Hicks throws out Vernon Wells at third from deep center (Video)

Aaron Hicks has been making spectacular defensive plays all season, and this time he made one with his arm.

Aaron Hicks throwHicks caught New York Yankees outfielder Vernon Wells trying to stretch a double into a triple during the bottom of the sixth inning of the Yanks’ 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Wells slugged a line drive to the right-center gap off Brian Duensing and made it easily into second, but he decided to try for third after the ball took a weird bounce off the wall. Hicks, though, seemed to almost set up Wells on the play by pretending like the ball was further away from him than it was. As soon as Wells started digging for three, Hicks picked up the ball and fired it into third on a fly to nail VW.

The throw was truly impressive, but the funny part is Hicks told reporter Rhett Bollinger after the game that he didn’t intend to throw it to third on a fly. Hicks told Bollinger he wanted to hit the cutoff man, but the ball sailed on him and luckily reached third baseman Trevor Plouffe.

Hicks has been making awesome plays all year. Earlier in the season, he hit two home runs and robbed one in the same game. Hicks also had this great game-saving catch on Wednesday at Tropicana Field:

Once he gets that batting average up, Hicks will start reminding Twins fans of Torii Hunter in center.
