Addison Barger slept on a teammate’s couch before his World Series heroics

Blue Jays' Addison Barger celebrating after hitting a grand slam during World Series Game 1

Addison Barger hit a grand slam for the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, and he did so without an ideal sleeping arrangement the night before.

Barger’s grand slam broke open what turned into an 11-4 Blue Jays win at Rogers Centre in Toronto, On. on Friday night. Blue Jays outfielder Davis Schneider gave some additional context to the performance, as it turned out Barger had spent the previous night on his pull-out couch.

“His family came in tonight. He needed someone (to host him),” Schneider said. “My girlfriend’s here, so he was like, ‘Can I sleep in the bed with you guys?’ I was like, no, sleep on my couch. It’s a pull-out. It was squeaking all night.”

Schneider further clarified that they were staying in one of the rooms at the Toronto Marriott City Centre Hotel, which is attached to Rogers Centre and provides select rooms that actually overlook the playing field. He said the group had been awakened at 9 a.m. by the on-field rehearsal for the player introductions.

In other words, Barger likely did not get the kind of sleep he would have hoped for the night before his first World Series game. It hardly mattered in the end, as he was able to provide a World Series first with his pinch-hit grand slam.

On one hand, the Blue Jays might benefit from getting Barger a more comfortable sleeping arrangement going forward. On the other, maybe they should just stick with what seems to have worked for Game 1.
