Alex Bregman makes a noteworthy decision

Alex Bregman is ready to do it all again in free agency this winter.

The Boston Red Sox star third baseman Bregman is planning to opt out of his contract with the team, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Tuesday. Heyman notes that the Red Sox still seem like a logical fit for Bregman but adds that several other contending teams (including the Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Seattle Mariners) will be in the mix as well.

Bregman, a three-time All-Star at 31 years old, signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox last winter. But the deal also came with opt-outs after the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and now Bregman has officially decided to exercise the former.

The move comes as Bregman had a nice year for the 89-win Red Sox, who lost in the AL Wild Card round to the rival New York Yankees. Bregman hit .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs overall.

But Bregman was limited to just 114 games played for Boston due to a quad injury in late May. That marked just the second time in his career that he missed over 20 games in a full season.

Still, Bregman is represented by Scott Boras, so his decision to once again test the free agent waters is far from a surprise here. Bregman will join a strong class of bats on the open market, including this fellow Boras client who also recently decided to opt out of his contract.
