Alex Bregman is not letting himself get bogged down by the Boston Red Sox’s ongoing dilemma at third base.
Since the Red Sox signed Bregman last week, Boston’s longtime third baseman Rafael Devers has been adamant that he does not plan to cede the position to his new teammate.
Bregman spoke to reporters Tuesday as the Red Sox prepared for spring training at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla. When asked about Boston’s positional uncertainty at third base, Bregman expressed his excitement to play alongside Devers. Bregman also added that he’ll leave the decision up to manager Alex Cora.
“I’m super excited to just be his teammate,” Bregman told reporters, via WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “He’s a great player. I think everybody in this clubhouse is worried about winning. And whatever it takes to help the team win, that’s all I’m focused on. I’ll player wherever [Alex Cora] tells me to play.”
Bregman is widely considered to be better defensively than Devers. But Devers has maintained that the team had promised him the position when he signed a huge contract extension with the Red Sox two years ago.
Cora, however, did not sound too bothered about potentially breaking the promise Devers received if it’s for the good of the team.
