Andrew McCutchen will not be ready for Opening Day, could return in April

Andrew McCutchen will need a bit more time to work back from his torn ACL.

Philadelphia Phillies manager Joe Girardi said on Friday that the veteran outfielder will not be ready for Opening Day on Mar. 26 and that the hope is he will be back some time in April, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Girardi added that McCutchen did not have a setback and that it is just a matter of him not having enough to pass the necessary tests before Opening Day.

The former NL MVP McCutchen, who is entering his age-33 season, suffered the injury rounding the bases during a game last June. That cut short a promising 2019 campaign where he had already logged 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 59 games.

McCutchen is getting paid a lot of money to produce for the Phillies, so it will be wise not to rush him back with how much they have invested in him.
