The Los Angeles Angels fired three coaches on Tuesday, and appear to have gone back on their word in doing so.
The Angels announced that pitching coach Mike Maddux, bullpen coach Don Chiti, and assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott have all been fired. Interim GM John Mozeliak said in a statement that after consulting with manager Kurt Suzuki, the team felt “it was best to make a change” for the benefit of the pitching staff.

Mozeliak became the interim GM in June when the Angels fired Perry Minasian. At that time, when asked about staff changes, he said he had informed coaches they were “all fine for this year.”

Beyond Mozeliak going back on his word, it’s somewhat remarkable that the Angels are allowing an interim GM to make these changes to begin with. That said, all three coaches were on one-year contracts, so keeping them until the end of the season may have simply been putting off the inevitable.
At 45-74, the Angels’ season is effectively over, and they are on their way to an 11th consecutive losing season. At least this time they can take solace in the fact that they weren’t all golfing together when people got shipped out this time.
