Angels announcers rip umpires over ‘ridiculous’ call to end game

Jo Adell slides into second base

The announcers for the Los Angeles Angels ripped the umpires after they felt a terrible call was made to end Wednesday’s 6-5 loss against the Baltimore Orioles at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.

The Angels fell behind 6-0 but rallied back to make it 6-5 in the 9th. Jo Adell drew a 2-out walk and then tried to steal second but was called out stealing.

The Angels challenged the call, feeling that Adell got his foot into second base before the tag was applied. Angels announcers Wayne Randazzo and Mark Gubicza felt the replays showed Adell reached second before he was tagged, so they were appalled when the call on the field stood following a review.

“That is absurd. That is absurd. That’s a joke. That’s a joke. Absolutely ridiculous. It is clear on the replay that Adell was safe. That is garbage,” Randazzo said.

Gubicza said the call was “unbelievable.”

Note that the umpires said the call stood, not that it was confirmed. That’s because they did not have enough evidence to definitively overturn the call.

“After viewing all relevant angles, the Replay Official could not definitively determine that the runner touched second base prior to the fielder applying the tag. The call STANDS, the runner is out,” the replay center umpire said.

Adell & Wash said final call was incorrect.

Replay center ump Carlos Torres: “After viewing all relevant angles, the Replay Official could not definitively determine that the runner touched second base prior to the fielder applying the tag. The call STANDS, the runner is out.”

The Angels have now lost six of their last seven games and are 10-15.
