The Angels are doing what they can to solidify their team in pursuit of a playoff spot.
Not only did the Angels acquire Justin Upton in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, but they are also trying to acquire Brandon Phillips from the Atlanta Braves.

Phillips was scratched for the Braves’ game against the Cubs Thursday, likely because of his involvement in trade talks. The veteran second baseman is batting .291 with 11 home runs this season and will be a free agent after the season, so he would just be a rental for the Angels.
The Angels entered Thursday 69-65 and in the middle of the wild card race. Seeking upgrades to their offense, they allowed the Astros to claim Cameron Maybin off waivers while they acquired Upton to play left field. Phillips would also serve as an offensive upgrade over Kaleb Cowart and Cliff Pennington at second.
