Anthony Volpe had a defensive blunder during his New York Yankees’ 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., on Wednesday night that cost his team.
Jo Adell was batting for the Angels with the bases loaded and one out with the scored tied 2-2. The Yankees were hoping for an inning-ending double play, and they got the perfect opportunity to turn one. Adell grounded a ball right to Volpe at shortstop, but Volpe misplayed the hop and was unable to field the ball cleanly. Though he picked up the ball with a nice recovery, he threw it past Oswald Peraza at second for an error.

Instead of having an inning-ending double play to preserve the tie, Volpe’s misplay allowed the Angels to take the lead and was the difference in the 3-2 game. The Yankees also had opportunities to score in the bottom of the 8th after they put the first two batters on with nobody out, but they were unable to drive them in.
That error went down as Volpe’s 9th of the season. That puts him third in MLB for the most errors among qualified shortstops this season.
