Former AL MVP gets demoted to minors
The Houston Astros have made a big decision concerning Jose Abreu.
The Astros announced on Tuesday that they have demoted the struggling Abreu. Abreu is being sent to the team’s spring training facility in Florida to regroup.
The move is designed to help Abreu “get some at-bats and his timing back right,” according to Houston general manager Dana Brown.
José Abreu is not with the Astros, GM Dana Brown said. Both sides decided that Abreu will be optioned to West Palm Beach effective tomorrow “to get some at-bats and his timing back right.”

The Astros will call up Joey Loperfido as part of the transaction, which will be effective Wednesday.
Abreu has had a really rough start to the season. The 2020 AL MVP is batting .099 this season. He has just 7 hits in 71 at-bats, with only one extra-base hit. He has just 3 walks and 18 strikeouts.
Abreu is in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million deal.
The Astros entered play on Tuesday 9-19, which had them last in the AL West.
