A’s trying to get Sonny Gray back?

Sonny Gray

After a forgettable tenure with the New York Yankees, Sonny Gray could be headed back to where it all began.

Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports reported this week that the Oakland Athletics are one of the teams seeking to make a trade for the former All-Star righty, who is widely expected to be dealt by the Yankees this winter.

Gray, who has one more season left on his contract, began his career with the A’s in 2013. There, he enjoyed his peak production, finishing third in AL Cy Young voting in 2015 before ultimately being traded to New York in 2017 for a package of prospects.

The 29-year-old has since posted a 4.51 ERA in 34 starts for the Yankees, who have now all but admitted that they want to get rid of him. A familiar, pitcher-friendly landing spot like Oakland could be just what Gray needs to get his career back on track.
