Billy Beane among highest water users during drought
Oakland A’s executive Billy Beane is playing a new version of money ball — this one involving his water bill.
The much lauded A’s VP was among the highest users of water in the East Bay area of Northern California this summer, records from the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) show, per the San Jose Mercury News.
Beane was the third-highest water user at just shy of 6,000 gallons per day.
“I certainly pay for it,” he said via the Mercury News.
The EBMUD declared a Stage 4 critical drought, which is the highest level of a drought. Because of the drought, members of the community were asked to follow water conservation efforts, including only watering twice per week. Watering was restricted to before 9:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m.
Excessive users of water were subject to penalties, which Beane says he pays for. Over 1,000 gallons of water used per day is considered excessive for purposes of the penalty.
