Blue Jays, Astros pull off trade that involves an odd twist

The Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros begin a three-game series on Monday at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. Now, hours before the trade deadline, the two sides have finalized a deal.

The Astros are acquiring center fielder and Gold Glove winner Daulton Varsho in exchange for starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti.

On Sunday, the Blue Jays traded veteran pitcher Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs, and Toronto then acquired pitcher Jose Soriano in a major deal with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

Now, the Blue Jays are trading away Varsho, who has a 2.43 average with 7 home runs and 26 RBIs in his fourth season with Toronto.

On the other hand, the Astros are hoping that Varsho can play on Monday in what would be an odd twist.

As it turns out, Toronto did the same thing as last year’s deadline.

Deal sending Daulton Varsho to Astros for righty Spencer Arrighetti, as @MitchBannon first reported, is done.

Second straight year Blue Jays have made a switch-clubhouses deal, having acquired Seranthony Dominguez from the Orioles between games of a doubleheader last summer.

Astros manager Joe Espada went to get Arrighetti from the bullpen as he was warming up ahead of Monday’s game, and if the medicals go through, the two players will have a short trip to meet their new teams.

Arrighetti has a 7-5 record with a 4.60 ERA and he last pitched one inning on July 24 against the Chicago White Sox.
