Bo Bichette is officially locking in the money.
The New York Mets infielder Bichette is picking up his $42 million player option to stay with the team, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported on Thursday. As a result, Bichette will now formally be under contract with the Mets for the 2027 MLB season.
Bichette, the two-time All-Star, left the Toronto Blue Jays last winter to sign with the Mets in free agency. He got a three-year, $126 million contract from New York but with opt-outs after each of the first two seasons.
In 2026, Bichette did not quite live up to expectations. A .294 hitter through his first seven career seasons, Bichette hit just .260 in 2026 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs (though he did manage to play in a career-high 160 games).
The Mets as a whole went on to flop as well. Despite having another MLB-leading payroll figure of $346.8 million in 2026, New York went just 74-88 and missed the playoffs altogether.
There was some real uncertainty as recently as last month over Bichette’s future. But with a possible MLB lockout looming, Bichette is taking the guaranteed money right now and will have an opt-out opportunity again after next season (which could prove to be lucrative if the righty hitter has a strong 2027 campaign).
