Brewers pull controversial move with Jacob Misiorowski

Fans who showed up for a Jacob Misiorowski-Logan Gilbert duel on Tuesday ending up feeling a bit disappointed.

The Milwaukee Brewers rookie pitching phenom Misiorowski was dealing during his start on Tuesday against Gilbert and the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash. Misiorowski racked up seven strikeouts by the fourth inning and was shutting the Mariners out when [checks notes] the Brewers decided to pull him from the contest in the middle of the frame after 3.2 total innings pitched.

Misiorowski, who was on a very modest pitch count of 64 at the time, had to sit and watch the rest of the game as Milwaukee’s bullpen finished things out. A solo home run by Mariners stud catcher Cal Raleigh during the sixth inning off Brewers reliever Nick Mears ended up being the difference maker as Seattle defeated Milwaukee by a 1-0 final score. Meanwhile, the Mariners All-Star pitcher Gilbert lasted 6.1 innings and struck out 10 to earn the win.

Fans immediately questioned why Misiorowski was pulled from a start where he looked to be in tip-top shape (and which also marked his first start since July 8, not counting the one inning that Misiorowski threw in relief during last week’s MLB All-Star Game). Plenty pointed out how Misiorowski had been on fire throughout the game velocity-wise as well.

Why we putting a pitching cap on Jacob Misiorowski in his 6th start?

wild move

The obvious theory was that Misiorowski, who ranged from 72-91 pitches in all of his previous big-league starts this season, is being managed by the Brewers. He is an extremely hard thrower who pitches for a team with title aspirations (and that is currently tied for the best record in Major League Baseball). Additionally, Misiorowski is now at 92.2 total innings thrown this season between the minors and the majors (with a career high of 97.1 innings thrown in the minors in 2024).

Others also pointed out that Misiorowski was struck on the rear by a Julio Rodriguez liner to begin the fourth inning on Tuesday, so the Brewers might have just been exercising caution.

Julio Rodríguez just smoked an 82.7 mph comebacker off Jacob Misiorowski for a leadoff single here in the 4th inning.

Nothing about Misiorowski’s shooting-star rookie season has been normal, and even his All-Star selection was the subject of much controversy. But if Tuesday’s game was any indication, Milwaukee might be keeping him on a strict workload for the remainder of the regular season as they look ahead to a potential World Series run.
