Cal Raleigh gave a heartbreaking interview after his Seattle Mariners lost in the ALCS on Monday night.
The Mariners held a 3-1 lead against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 at Rogers Center in Toronto after six and a half innings. Raleigh continued his monster season by homering in the fifth to put his team up 3-1.
Just when they were nine outs away from making it to their first World Series in franchise history, the pitching fell apart. Bryan Woo allowed a walk and a hit to put two on immediately. After a sacrifice bunt, the Mariners put in Eduardo Bazardo, who gave up a 3-run home run to George Springer to give Toronto a 4-3 lead. The Blue Jays won it by that score to advance to the World Series.
Raleigh was completely gutted after the loss.
“I hate to use the word failure, but’s it’s a failure. We expected to get to the World Series and win the World Series,” the Mariners catcher said.
He was visibly emotional after the season-ending loss.

Between his 60 home runs in the regular season and five homers in the postseason, Raleigh slugged 65 home runs this season, which is an American League record. He even homered with the season on the line in Game 7. To come out on the losing end despite all that explains why Raleigh took the loss so hard.
