Has a divine intervention changed the fortunes of the Chicago White Sox? General manager Chris Getz certainly thinks so.
Since Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and White Sox fan, was elected by the conclave on May 8, the tides have turned for The South Siders. They have gone from 10-28 to 14-31, including a series win over the Cincinnati Reds.
While a 4-3 stretch may not seem like anything to write home about, it’s a welcomed change in Chicago after the team finished with an ungodly 121 losses a season ago.
“It’s been exciting obviously, to have someone of that significance be a White Sox fan. Since he’s been announced to become the Pope, the White Sox have tacked on some wins. White Sox fans have certainly become more revitalized. They’ve celebrated the first American Pope in a variety of ways, including wearing costumes at Rate Field and selling Pope-White Sox merchandise.
There’s no way of knowing if Pope Leo XIV has watched any of these recent wins given his added responsibilities, but you had better believe he’s keeping up one his hometown White Sox somehow.
The ChiSox will continue their Chicago vs. Chicago series against the Cubs on Saturday with the final game of the series coming on Sunday.
