Report: Cubs are David Price’s ‘first choice’ in free agency

Major League Baseball’s free agency period opens on Saturday, and David Price will be one of the most sought-after free agents on the market. However, a new report says that he already has an ideal destination in mind.

FOX Sports’s Ken Rosenthal reports that an executive who knows Price says that the Chicago Cubs are his “first choice,” and that two agents believe that Price will land with the Cubs.

Price and the Cubs have been linked plenty before, and it’s a pairing that makes a lot of sense. Price is still young enough that a long-term deal wouldn’t be a disaster, and Joe Maddon was Price’s manager for the first six years of his career when both were with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Cubs are also looking for more pitching, and a trio of Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, and Price would be fearsome to face if the team could get back to the postseason. In July of 2014, Price said that winning a World Series with the Cubs would be the “coolest.” That statement was made well before the Cubs proved themselves as contenders, so Price’s opinion probably hasn’t changed much.

Rosenthal cites the Giants, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Red Sox as other potential destinations for Price, but if the Cubs are serious about getting him, it would appear that the ace left-hander is theirs to lose.
