Cubs reportedly interested in signing Jonathan Lucroy

The injury to All-Star Willson Contreras has the Chicago Cubs scrambling to fill the catcher position.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported on Monday that the NL Central leaders are considering signing veteran Jonathan Lucroy, who was just DFA’d by the Los Angeles Angels.

The 33-year-old Lucroy, who was with the division rival Milwaukee Brewers for many years, hit an underwhelming .242 in 74 games for the Angels this season and saw his usually stellar defensive metrics continue their downward slide. But the Cubs have a need after they dealt catcher Martin Maldonado to the Houston Astros last week, only for Contreras to strain his hamstring on Saturday in what could be a multi-week injury.

With St. Louis sitting a mere 1.5 games behind them in the standings, Lucroy would probably love the opportunity to stick it to the Cards for old times’ sake.
