David Ortiz to have gate named after him at Logan Airport
David Ortiz’s career may be over, but he honors and tributes continue to roll in.
Since signing with the Red Sox in 2003 as a free agent, Ortiz has become synonymous with Boston and one of the most popular athletes to play in the city. Now, he will forever be remembered at one of Boston’s landmarks, Logan International Airport.
During a ceremony on Friday, JetBlue Airlines announced Gate 34 in Terminal C will be named after Ortiz.
“You mean I’m going to have my own gate at the airport?” Ortiz said at the event, via the Boston Globe. “You’re (expletive) with me, aren’t you?”
Ortiz had one of his best ever seasons for the Red Sox in 2016. He hit .315/.401/.620 with a major league leading 48 doubles, 38 home runs, 127 RBI, and was named an all-star for the 10th time.
In 2006, Ortiz established a Red Sox single-season record with 54 home runs. He also ranks second in Red Sox history in home runs (483), third in doubles (524), fourth in slugging percentage (.570), fifth in games played (1,953) and runs scored (1,204), and sixth in hits (2,079).
