David Price could return to Red Sox in bullpen role
David Price’s role upon returning to the Red Sox from an elbow injury may not be one we have become accustomed to seeing him excel in.
Price’s 2017 season has been one that has been marred by injury. He didn’t make his debut until the end of May as a result of inflammation in his elbow that occurred during spring training. Price made 11 starts for Boston, but once again found himself back on the disabled list in July after the inflammation returned.
His latest rehab stint saw Price face live hitters prior to Boston’s game on Saturday. Afterward, manager John Farrell indicated Price did not suffer any ill effects, which is obviously a good sign. Farrell also mentioned Price’s role upon being activated from the disabled list will be discussed.
“I think after the next sim-game setting like this, we’ll have a chance to sit down and talk with him and decide what’s the best path as far as what the role could be. We’re not at that point yet,” Farrell told MLB.com.
Price has been primarily a starter for his career, and a very good one at that. He’s made five All-Star teams and has a Cy Young Award to his credit. However, Farrell seemed to indicate Price could pitch out of the bullpen when healthy, which he has done on a few occasions.
There is no timetable yet for Price’s return as he and the team are taking it day-by-day. When he is back, we probably shouldn’t be surprised if he’s entering games in the middle or end instead of starting them.
