David Wright credited with helping seal deGrom extension
The New York Mets may have received an unexpected assist in sealing Jacob deGrom’s contract extension.
According to Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, it was Wright, now a special assistant to the GM, who came up with the structure that deGrom and the Mets ultimately agreed on in settling a new contract.
David Wright is now "officially the most valuable special advisor in history," Brodie Van Wagenen said. It was Wright who helped come up with the final "creative" deal structure on deGrom's contract.

deGrom had not sounded optimistic about striking a deal not long before it was actually completed. Perhaps Wright’s intervention really was that vital. He only retired at the end of last season, so he would still have a player-oriented perspective on contractual matters, and he’d know deGrom fairly well. Even in retirement, it looks like the former third baseman is still helping the Mets in a big way.
