David Wright wants to play in 2018
David Wright has become something of an afterthought for the New York Mets, but the one-time star third baseman isn’t giving up on 2018 yet.
Wright has undergone back and shoulder surgeries since last August, and while he wants to contribute, he admitted that he’s unsure if his health will cooperate enough to get him on a field in 2018.
“I’m going to give it my best shot, certainly,” Wright said Saturday, via ESPN and the AP. “I probably have a lot of the same questions you’re asking me and a lot of people are asking of me. I just don’t know. It’s certainly been an uphill climb for me.
“To honestly answer your question, I just don’t know. I’d love to play, but my body’s got to hold up and have to cooperate with me a little bit.”
Wright has played 75 games at the Major League level since the end of the 2014 season. His 2016 season was cut short by a back injury as well, which has been a nagging problem for him. It’s probably best that the Mets not count on much out of him in 2018.
