Derek Jeter turns heads with his claim about Aaron Boone

Aaron Boone is facing an uncertain future with the New York Yankees, but Derek Jeter and other franchise legends were quick to defend the manager following Wednesday night’s season-ending loss.

The Yankees were completely overmatched in the ALDS, which ended with the Toronto Blue Jays’ 5-2 win in Game 4 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. All eyes are now on Boone, as many believe he will be fired after the Bronx Bombers failed to win a World Series for the 16th straight year.

During the FS1 postgame show, Jeter made some comments that generated a lot of attention. The Hall of Fame shortstop suggested that Boone is not the one making all in-game decisions for the Yankees.

“I know he takes a lot of heat. But look, I’m not saying it from any inside knowledge, but I’m pretty sure Aaron’s not the one that’s calling every move that they make throughout the game,” Jeter said.

"And he [Boone] sticks up for his players, I know he takes a lot of heat. But, I'm not saying it from any inside knowledge but I'm pretty sure Aaron is not the one that's calling every move that they make throughout the game."

Jeter added that he feels Boone has done a “good job” with the Yankees and is simply working with what he has been given.

While he did not go into detail, it seems like Jeter was saying Boone is expected to follow some analytics-based script that has been put together by general manager Brian Cashman and the team’s front office. That would go beyond roster construction, which Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez feels is the biggest issue with his former team.

“Honestly, from the entire organization, he’s the one guy I would circle that has the least to blame,” A-Rod said. “He’s got a lot of talent, but for me, personally, one of the worst constructions of a roster I have ever seen. You have three left-handed catchers. You have five DHs. You have a first baseman in and out. It’s just a very, very difficult hand for Boone and, honestly, they were exposed against a much better Jays team.”

Boone was blasted over one particular decision he made during New York’s AL Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox, and the criticism seemed warranted. The question that was raised by Jeter is whether decisions like that are being made by Boone or if he has been forced to stick to a script.

Boone was quick to call out a Blue Jays analyst before the ALDS, but his team barely put up a fight. The manager might wind up taking the fall for that, whether he deserves to or not.
