Miami Marlins minority owner Derek Jeter spoke with the media on Wednesday ahead of the team’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Among the topics he discussed was the job status of manager Don Mattingly.
Mattingly has been the Marlins’ manager since 2016 and is in the final season of a four-year contract.
“There hasn’t been a decision yet,” Jeter said. “We’ve been so focused on getting through the trade deadline and seeing what we can do. At the end of every year, we sit down and we evaluate all members of the organization … we sit down and do that. But to be fair to Donnie, it’s something we need to talk about sooner rather than later. We have touched base and we’ll continue to talk about in the next few weeks.”

Mattingly has not had a winning season with the Marlins, though some of that is by design for the rebuilding club. He has a career .437 winning percentage with the team. The Marlins have the worst record in the National League this season.
