Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Friday provided an update on the status of relief pitcher Alex Vesia.

The team had said on Thursday that Vesia was away from the Dodgers as he and his wife navigated a “deeply personal matter.” On Friday, Roberts told reporters that Vesia was unlikely to appear in the World Series at all. The Dodgers left Vesia off the World Series roster entirely rather than put him on the Family Emergency List so that they wouldn’t put pressure on him to return sooner than necessary.

“I think we exhausted a couple different options, but just considering obviously what he’s going through…we as an organization (thought) this was probably the best way to handle it,” Roberts told reporters.

The Dodgers are NOT expecting Alex Vesia to return to the team during the World Series 😢

The Dodgers decided to carry 12 pitchers (not including Shohei Ohtani) on their World Series roster. Edgardo Henriquez and Will Klein were added to their bullpen, while Vesia and Ben Casparius are off the series roster. Vesia would only be able to pitch in the World Series this year as an injury replacement.

Losing Vesia is a tough blow for the Dodgers’ bullpen. The southpaw posted a 3.02 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 68 regular-season games, and hadn’t allowed a run in six straight postseason outings. He made two appearances in the wild-card series against the Reds, three in the NLDS against the Phillies, and two in the NLCS against the Brewers.

Vesia went the entire postseason last year without allowing a run.
