Report: Edinson Volquez’s father died day of Game 1
The father of Kansas City Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez died on Tuesday, the same day his son was set to start Game 1 of the World Series, according to multiple reports.
Z101’s Hector Gomez reports that Edinson’s father, Daniel (also reported as Danio) Volquez, died at the age of 63 of heart disease. ESPN Deportes’ Enrique Rojas reports the same and says Daniel Volquez died in the Dominican Republic.
Edinson Volquez was warming up in the Royals’ bullpen at Kauffman Stadium when the news emerged. It was unclear whether or not the 32-year-old pitcher was aware of the sad news. ESPN reported that Volquez learned the news on his way to the ballpark, but the KC Star’s Vahe Gregorian says the Royals told him otherwise.
