Edwin Diaz showing 1 concerning sign as his struggles with Dodgers continue

Edwin Diaz is giving Los Angeles Dodgers fans some 2025 Tanner Scott flashbacks right now.

The Dodgers reliever Diaz struggled again on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, Colo. Diaz entered in a non-save situation during the eighth inning with the Dodgers trailing 6-4 … and quickly proceeded to make things worse.

Facing four total batters, Diaz failed to record a single out. He allowed a walk and three base hits, including a two-RBI single by Edouard Julien on Diaz’s final pitch of the game. Diaz was then pulled for Dodgers teammate Kyle Hurt, who proceeded to allow an inherited runner to score. That gave Diaz a total of three earned runs allowed in 0.0 official innings pitched on Sunday.

Colorado thus finished out the eighth inning with a 9-4 lead over the Dodgers. They also held on to win by a final score of 9-6, giving the Rockies two out of three victories in the series over the Dodgers.

Team publication Dodgers Blue shared a very concerning sign for Diaz during the outing. Diaz’s average fastball velocity was down to 95.4 mph on Sunday (and 95.8 mph on the season overall). That is down from Diaz’s average fastball velocity of 97.2 mph last season and 97.7 mph for his MLB career as a whole (per Fangraphs).

Edwin Díaz's average fastball velocity was 95.4 mph that inning. It's 95.8 this season. Last year it was 97.2 mph.

The three-time All-Star Diaz, 32, last pitched on April 10 against the Texas Rangers and also gave up three earned runs in that game to blow the save. After Sunday’s disaster against the Rockies, Diaz is now up to a woeful 10.50 ERA on the season.

After signing Diaz to a three-year, $69 million contract over the offseason, the Dodgers still have yet to see much return on their investment. There were rumors of a potential injury for Diaz during his lengthy nine-day layoff, and it is clear that something is not quite right with the former AL saves leader at the moment.
