Fans had the most ruthless reactions to the Mets’ message for traded pitcher

Hearts aren’t exactly broken in Queens after the news of Freddy Peralta’s trade from the New York Mets to the Tampa Bay Rays.

On Sunday, New York traded the 30-year-old Peralta to the Rays in exchange for three minor leaguers in outfielder Aidan Smith, infielder Emilien Pitre and right-hander Gary Gill Hill.

In a farewell post for Peralta, the Mets expressed their gratitude for his contributions to the team over a short time.

Meanwhile, several fans took to the post’s comment section to express their bewilderment over what exactly the Mets were thanking Peralta for, considering his disappointing numbers with the team.

For what exactly? Being trash? Having the second highest era in baseball?

For what?

The Mets traded infielder Jett Williams and pitcher Brandon Sproat to the Milwaukee Brewers in January to get Peralta and another pitcher in Tobias Myers.

That deal initially sounded like a fair one for the Mets since Peralta had just led the National League in wins (17) in the previous season. But he’s regressed in 2026,  going just 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA and an 83 OPS+ in 22 starts.  Those are numbers Mets fans clearly aren’t appreciating.

Peralta, however, is now in a much better position to win a World Series than the Mets are to even make the playoffs.

The Rays are currently leading the American League with a 65-46 record, while the Mets are wallowing in the bottom of the NL East standings with a 47-66 record (20.5 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves).
