Freddy Peralta’s pitching malaise appears to have followed him to Florida.
The 30-year-old Peralta did not have a great introduction to Tampa Bay Rays fans, as his first start with his new team was atrocious.
Pitching against the Colorado Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field in Denver, Colo., Peralta allowed 7 earned runs on 9 hits (2 home runs) and issued a walk with only 3 strikeouts in just 3 2/3 innings of work.
Peralta surrendered only a run in the first two innings before the Rays roughed him up for four more runs in the third inning. In the fourth frame, he gave up a 2-run home run to Will Castro and, after facing three more Rockies hitters, got replaced on the mound by Cam Booser.
At the same time, Peralta also experienced what it’s like to be backed by robust run support. Despite his awful performance, he avoided picking up a pitching loss, with Tampa Bay’s offense picking things up, as the Rays came away with a 9-7 victory.
Before getting traded to the Rays, Peralta went just 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA. He will have to wait a little longer again for a chance to taste a pitching win, which he last had on June 14 against the Atlanta Braves.
