Gary Sanchez breaks up no-hitter after benefiting from controversial call

Gary Sanchez checks his swing

New York Yankees fans were upset on Saturday after a controversial call helped Gary Sanchez break up a no-hitter.

The Yankees shutout the Baltimore Orioles 9-0 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday. Baltimore was limited to just one hit, which is an amazing result. But it was disappointing for the Yankees and their fans. Starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt went 7 hitless innings, though he walked two batters and hit one. After Schmidt departed the game following his seven innings of work, JT Brubaker entered the game. Brubaker allowed a hit to Sanchez to begin the 8th, which ended the no-hit bid.

Sanchez was facing a 2-2 count and offered at a breaking ball low and away before holding up. The Yankees appealed to the first base umpire, who said that Sanchez did not swing. That decision allowed things to go to a full count, and Sanchez drilled a line drive single to center field.

Should Sanchez have been called out?

That’s a borderline call, and the umpires gave Sanchez the benefit of the doubt. If Yankees fans want to be upset with anyone, it should be with Brubaker, who let his 3-2 pitch catch too much of the middle of the plate.

Brubaker finished the game allowing the one hit and a walk over two scoreless innings. Thanks to his seven scoreless innings, Schmidt lowered his ERA to 2.84. Sanchez, a former Yankee, raised his batting average to .213 with his 1-for-3 game.
