The San Francisco Giants wrapped up their fourth consecutive season with a winning record on Sunday, and they are now once again searching for a new manager.
Bob Melvin has been fired by the Giants, the team announced on Monday. President of baseball operations Buster Posey issued a statement thanking Melvin for his “dedication, professionalism, and class.”
“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” Posey said. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”
The Giants beat the Colorado Rockies in their season finale on Sunday to finish the year 81-81. They have not had a winning season since they won 107 games under former manager Gabe Kapler in 2021. San Francisco lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS that year.
Melvin was hired by the Giants ahead of the 2024 season. He went 161-163 across his two seasons with the franchise.
The 63-year-old Melvin was the manager of the San Diego Padres for two seasons before he landed in San Francisco. He has also managed the Oakland A’s, Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. He has a winning percentage of .514 in the regular season and a record of 16-23 in the playoffs.
