Hanley Ramirez reportedly willing to change positions

Hanley-Ramirez

Hanley Ramirez is one of the biggest names on the free agent market this winter. Ramirez, one of the best hitting shortstops in baseball, is reportedly open to changing positions if need be.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Ramirez has told interested teams that he is willing to play “wherever there’s a need.” Teams like the Boston Red Sox will be in the market for a third baseman this winter. The New York Yankees will be, too, if they can’t re-sign Chase Headley.

Most shortstops are reluctant to give up their position, and I’m sure Ramirez would prefer to keep his. But being open to playing third base — or at least pretending he is — can only help boost the demand for Hanley.

A team like the Red Sox, who seem committed to up-and-coming superstar Xander Bogaerts at shortstop next season, could at the very least drive up the price for the Los Angeles Dodgers and other teams. The Yankees, who are in need of a shortstop with Derek Jeter having retired, might be inclined to give Ramirez a longer look if he is willing to play multiple positions.
