Jazz Chisholm went down looking to end Wednesday’s game, but he didn’t exactly go down quietly.
The New York Yankees-Houston Astros game at Daikin Park in Houston, Tex. ended in controversy. Chisholm, the Yankees infielder, was up to bat in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and nobody on in an 8-7 ballgame (after Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer earlier in the frame to draw the Yankees to within one run).
Astros closer Bryan Abreu appeared to miss outside with a 3-2 pitch that would have put Chisholm on first base. But instead, home plate umpire Brian Walsh called the pitch a strike to end the game.
Chisholm was not at all pleased with the call and gave Walsh an earful as Walsh made his way off the field. Here is the video.

While the Yankees did not have anybody on base at the time, a walk to Chisholm would have put Giancarlo Stanton at the plate. Chisholm is a speedy runner too with 26 stolen bases on the year and would have likely been able to put some pressure on Abreu, who had already given up the three-run blast to Bellinger at that point.
The Yankees did have themselves to blame for the loss as they blew a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning and allowed the Astros to score seven runs unanswered from there. But Walsh, who has only been working MLB games since 2023, has already developed a reputation for blown calls, and Chisholm was his latest victim during Wednesday’s game.
