Joaquin Benoit tore his calf running out of bullpen in fight with Yankees
Joaquin Benoit will be out for some time after tearing his left calf muscle on Monday, but it’s not what happened so much as how it happened that’s the story.
Benoit’s Blue Jays got into a benches-clearing fight with the Yankees Monday, and the relief pitcher hurt himself running out from the bullpen to participate in the fracas, if you can believe that.
Things got heated between the sides after the Yankees hit Josh Donaldson. Toronto’s JA Happ responded by throwing at Chase Headley. Then the Jays threw at Justin Smoak, leading to the big brawl.
You can see Benoit limping off the field in this video:
Benoit had been nails for the Jays since being acquired in a trade. He was 2-0 with a 0.38 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 23.2 innings with Toronto.
